the WHO...WHAT...WHY….HOW and WHERE……. of the PROSPECT HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB This information has been prepared to assist you, a prospective member of the PROSPECT HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB, to better understand the many aspects of Lionism. It has been created to answer all the basic questions, normally asked by a candidate for membership in this organization in the simplest, most concise way possible.
WHO ARE THE LIONS? The PROSPECT HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB is a service organization of members in our community that are compelled to offer a small portion of their most valuable asset, their time. Our members use that time to serve the community by helping those less fortunate within our community, our state, our country, and worldwide.
On March 24, 1954 the PROSPECT HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB was chartered by Lions Clubs International. The PROSPECT HEIGHTS LIONS CLUB stands on a proud record of service to the Visually Impaired, the Hearing Impaired, and to our own community for over 55 years. Helping others along the way, past and present Prospect Heights Lions Members have had the glowing experience of sharing in projects, fundraisers, and the activities of Lionism.
The International Association of Lions Clubs began with Melvin Jones, a Chicago Insurance executive, which thought there should be an International organization of community service clubs. He was, at that time, secretary of a club known as Chicago Business Circle. He called a meeting of delegates from similar clubs in other states. The result was a convention of Lions International of Dallas in 1917 when the constitution of the organization was adopted.
Lions International has grown to become the largest, most active, and fastest growing service organization in the world. Lions are an international network of 1.3 million men and women in 202 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world
Lions Clubs are non-political, non-sectarian service organizations which recognize community needs and develop means of meeting them, either through their own efforts or in cooperation with other agencies. In addition, Lions International works closely with the United Nations in the promotion of international friendship and cooperation and social, cultural and economic progress throughout the world.
The official publication of the International Association of Lions Club is THE LION, a monthly magazine which is sent to all members. It is published in 11 languages in addition to English.
Each member shares a common bond of dedicated service in helping others. Our motto is WE SERVE, with special emphasis placed on the blind & visually impaired as well as the deaf & hearing impaired of each community served.
The World Headquarters of Lions Clubs International is located in Oakbrook, Illinois.
WHAT ARE THE CLUBS ACTIVITIES? Thanks to countless hours spent by our members now and in past years, thousands of dollars have been raised and spent in the development of many civic and recreational services, in a people helping each other movement. Examples of these services to the community are:
